TVVS: Getting ready for winter

With the return of Leyland Atlantean HRS270V - restored for winter storage it was once again time to get the garage tidied and the buses parked in such a way as to allow planned work to take place over the next few months.

This time Bristol VRT OSR204R was on the move giving us the opportunity to take some more recent photographs of it and the bus a chance to bask in some autumn sunshine.

We also had the opportunity to photograph the front nearside of Daimler Fleetline GSL908N which is alongside Daimler Fleetline PYJ461L on which restoration work has stopped following the sudden death of the main restoration team member Jim Elder  - see this post.

The centre door location on GSL908N had to be revealed to allow suitable parts to be sourced so it could be reinstated. The front of the top deck also had to be revealed on both GSL908N and OSR204R to allow accident damage to be removed and suitable replacements manufactured.

Vehicle updates: ULS330T, GSO86V, HSR46X and M953XES

We are pleased to report that work on the restoration of Leyland Leopard ULS330T is progressing very well. The vehicle has now been moved to undercover storage at the Scottish Vintage Bus Museum which will allow work to continue in a much more protected environment.

Leyland Olympian M953XES has been given a thorough clean inside and out with plans drawn up for its phased restoration.

Similarly Volvo Ailsa HSR46X has now been adopted by two of our members and work in the interior of the bus is well under way.

Finally Leyland Leopard GSO86V has been given a good clean to prepare it for the winter weather.

Event: 11 September 2016 - Farming Yesteryear, Scone Palace Parklands

Sunday 11 September saw our Leyland National WBW735X - restored back out on the road once again and this time it was the first appearance of the bus at Farming Yesteryear held at Scone Palace Parklands, by Perth and hosted by Scottish Vintage Tractor & Engine Club.

Keeping us company was 1972 Leyland Leopard PSU3/3R Alexander Y type XGM450L T150 Central SMT which our National last met a couple of years ago in Glasgow but then they were at opposite sides of the garage!

The good weather also allowed us to put our popular photograph collection on display alongside the bus documenting Dundee Buses in the 20th Century.

And on the way back home we just happened to pass one of the much more up-to-date buses currently on route 7 to Scone - 2012 Alexander Dennis Enviro 350H hybrid SP12DYS 29016 Stagecoach in Perth.

Event: 27 & 28 August 2016 - Day Out with Thomas at Caledonian Railway's Bridge of Dun station

On Saturday 27 & Sunday 28 August 2016 our Leyland National WBW735X - restored was back on duty providing the link service between Caledonian Railway's Bridge of Dun station and Montrose High Street for the second of their two special "Day Out with Thomas" weekends.

We ran six trips per day and carried nearly 150 passengers with the highlight once again being the "race" between Thomas and the bus from the station to a nearby bridge.

We all really enjoyed meeting so many Thomas fans young and not so young over the four days and hopefully we'll manage to do it all again next year. Who knows, maybe the bus will win just once!

Event: 21 August 2016 - Tay Road Bridge 50th anniversary

The Tay Road Bridge, which links Dundee and Fife, was officially opened on 18 August 1966 marking the end of the Fifies (ferries) which operated across the River Tay.

To mark this event Taybus Vintage Vehicle Society was pleased to run two of our award-winning restored buses across the bridge a number of times and line them up at the Fife side of the bridge, a place where a number of buses from many Dundee operators have been photographed over the years.

Volvo Ailsa WTS272T - restored won the Roland Williams Best Bus trophy presented by the Scottish Vintage Bus Museum in 2013 with Leyland National WBW735X - restored winning the same award two years later.

Coming after a successful weekend at the Scottish Vintage Bus Museum we were delighted to be able to take make our contribution towards the celebrations that marked this significant anniversary.

Volvo Ailsa WTS272T - restored was also at Lathalmond for both days and is photographed in Dunfermline Bus Station.

On Sunday both buses were joined by Leyland National WBW735X - restored returning to Lathalmond for the first time since May 2015.

Event: Day Out with Thomas feedback

The following was posted on the TripAdvisor website regarding Caledonian Railway's Day Out with Thomas weekend on 23 & 24 July 2016 for which Taybus Vintage Vehicle Society operated the free bus service.

We travelled to Brechin (2.5hrs) as we couldn't make the dates of the one in Bo'ness. My son had a fantastic day. No queuing to get on the train. When we arrived at Bridge of Dun the free bus was waiting for us. All staff both at the station & on the bus were so friendly & helpful. The bus staff slowed down the bus so we could take pictures of Thomas going down the track & handed us a timetable for our return journey when we got off. There were lots of free activities at Brechin station. Food & drinks were reasonably priced. My son had such a good time he didn't want to leave so started to cry. The fat controller came over to make sure he was ok and chatted to him & shook his hand. Would definitely highly recommend.

There's another Thomas weekend on 27 & 28 August 2016 and once again we'll be providing the free bus service on both days.

Event: 10 July 2016 - Scottish Transport Extravaganza at Glamis Castle

Our fourth outing of 2016 saw us take three vehicles to the Scottish Transport Extravaganza at Glamis Castle - Daimler CVG6 ETS964 - restored, Humber Hawk RFF340 - restored and Leyland National WBW735X - restored.

Once again there was quite a lot of rain making the ground very soft and the exit quickly turned to mud. The Humber and Daimler took this in their stride but the National needed a little persuasion to leave the event!

Ready to leave:

Event: 12 June 2016 - Tayside Classic Motor Show at Errol Airfield

Today saw Taybus Vintage Vehicle Society back out on the road again and making its second visit to the Tayside Classic Motor Show at Errol Airfield was Leyland National WBW735X - restored.

Incidentally, by a remarkable coincidence, the Harry Lawson tanker next to us was painted by Brian Robertson who also brush painted the Leyland National and Volvo Ailsa WTS272T - restored!

2 June 2016

Event: 29 May 2016 - Bus Collection at Alford Open Day

Sunday once again saw Taybus out on the road for the 2016 rally season and this time our port of call was the excellent Bus Collection at Alford located next to the equally splendid Grampian Transport Museum.

Back on the road after lengthy repairs was Leyland National WBW735X - restored which quickly made friends with two other Leyland National buses - newly restored 1976 Leyland National KSO74P 74 Grampian and a restoration-in-waiting 1978 Leyland National SBK740S 40 First Provincial.

With another three buses being worked on that day it meant that seven buses in our collection were on the move.

Our dear friend and miracle worker Jim Elder

It is with great sadness that after a short illness our good friend and regular miracle worker Jim Elder passed away on Thursday 19 May 2016. Jim's amazing skills, like the man himself, are simply irreplaceable and our thoughts are with Jim's family at this difficult time.
